Facades

Assignment 2-Introduction to Design

In Assignment 2, we are supposed to make a facade that are in geometric shapes with design principles and design elements included. This assignment is to include the elements learnt in Assignment 1-Graphic Journal to expand our ideas through facades. Design principles and elements are to include through the facades based on the songs given to us.

Main goal of this assignment is to present our facades through the song. Along with two other members who are Carmen Chan and Khoo Sue Ling, we were given the song 'Me Too' by Meghan Trainor.

In the first tutorial session, we had a small workshop on the elements that can be looked at through the song, for example the tempo, beat or even theme that can be retrieved from the song itself. This approach can be trivial because it can be create ideas and involve critical thinking skills to be done during the session.

For the first vertical line from the left are the first drawings that each of us had done. We were required to be blinded and listen to the song while drawing anything that comes to mind with lines and points. As for the second vertical line from the left, we were then asked to draw anything that comes to mind regarding on the song. As we discover further, we all emphasized on different things, for example the elements to looks at in the music video of the song. The last vertical line are the geometrical shapes that we can come out with the previous design. All these drawing were based on the design principle that we chose which was emphasis and contrast. This continuous design process helped us to think critically about our song and look into the design principles that we can come out with. The first part of the design process helped us to continue with the mock-up models.

Design Process

The preliminary idea of the facade was based on the beat and rhythm of the song where it has a Electronic Dance Music (EDM) background music. The keyword was "distorted" and homophobic which resembles back to the music. The mock-up facade (left) was based on lines, depth and much rhythm a repeated background music with repeated lines. With much repetition, also comes unity and harmony in the design. The mock-up facades was rejected because it does not really resembles the requirement of a facade. The facade that meets the requirement is not only stacking lines but also seems like a wall art. We had to redo last minute knowing the facade that was previously proposed is rejected.

The final design was still based on the keyword "distorted". With irregular shapes and patterns, the distorted feel of the facades achieved the basic requirement. There are hollow facades that concludes the whole outlook of having depth in the rhythm. The colour pink represents the feminine and feminist Meghan Trainor and also being bold to be yourself with confidence. The mixture of colour blue and red in third facade from the left is the colour scheme that comes from her music video which show calm but fierce when confident.

The presentation boards includes the meaning of the design with design elements and principles plus techniques that are presented through the facades. Colour scheme and also sound waves are the main element to be included in the presentation boards to explain about the design of the facades.

REFLECTION

Facades assignment got us a tiring and much effort on choosing the final design because we were told to change the design of the facades last minute. It got me and my group members frustrated and tiresome because we did not expect our last design to be rejected the day before presentation day.I  learnt to be observant and critical on the details of the facades in order to look at it as a whole. However, we did our best and completed the work just in time for presentattion day. It was the most insecure artwork that we have produced because of the rejection last minute.
